Special Exhibition
Wings of Hope: Gallé, Daum, Lalique— Japonisme, Birds, and Glass
The Kitazawa Museum of Art, known for its Gallé, Daum, and Lalique collection, presents this special exhibition on the theme of birds flying high in the sky, carrying our hopes for an end to the corona pandemic. The Imperial Eagle and the Gallic Rooster, the national symbol of France, are traditional motifs used in Western crests and coats of arms. During the Art Nouveau period in the late nineteenth century, when Gallé and the Daum brothers were in the limelight, fascination with Japan, shortly after it had opened to the world, surged. One sign of that soaring Japonisme was the popularity of elegant, exotic avian motifs from Japan’s ukiyo-e and craft works. Swallows and sparrows, which live close to human homes, or waterfowl such as geese and herons—their wings, elegantly projected in glass, glow with the light of hope.
Please enjoy these soaring works as well as Lamp “Les Coprins” (Inky Cap Lamp), Coupe “Rose de France” and the many other Gallé masterpieces that are the pride of the Kitazawa Museum of Art.
